Introduction of the Poem

This poem ' The Road not Taken ' is written by ' Robert Frost' a famous poem of this American writer which was published in 1916. 'The road not taken ' deals with the dilemmas that a man faces in life. In this poem poet makes a fascinating use of two roads as a metaphor for life.The two roads stand for the choices we make in life. Poet gets two roads but being individual he can't walk  on both  the roads. Ones future depends on his decision. If the choices made by us happens to be not correct , we have to face the consequences as steps once taken cannot be retracted.


Word - Meaning

Diverged - separated or went in different direction.
Yellow woods - leaves turn in yellow as it is autumn season.
Fair - good
Better Claim - it appears to be better.
Wanted wear - has not been used and worn so frequently.
Trodden - walked
Sigh - regret or to take a deep breath out of sorrow.


Poetic Devices -

Metaphor - whole poem is a metaphor as
Ex - " Two roads diverged in a yellow wood"  is a metaphor where two roads are compared with the way of life.

Alliteration - wanted wear

Simile -  as just as fair ( use of as)

Personification -  

" Because it was grassy and wanted wear" 
The grassy path 'wanted wear' while wanting is human need or quality.

Anaphora -  
And  be one traveler, long I stood 
And looked down one as far as I could

Repetition -  " Somewhere ages and ages                           hence"
 The word ages repeats twice.

Imagery - 

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood" ( a picture of yellow wood or forest )

" And both that morning equally lay"
" In leaves no steps had trodden black"
