NCERT Questions

Q - 1  Has Lushkoff become a beggar by  circumstances or by choice ?
Ans -  Lushkoff was not a beggar. His problems made him beggar.
Lushkoff was a singer who used to sing in the choir. He lost his job because of alcohol  abuse.  Because of this he was out of the rehabilitation center , the social stigma of being a drunkard prevented him from getting a job. That is why to survive his life he started begging.

Q -2  What reason does he give to Sergei for his telling lies ?
Ans - When Sergei confronts him and threatens to hand him over  to the police for telling a lie, Lushkoff tells him truth.
He accepts that he was neither a student nor a teacher. He was only a singer who was thrown out of the Russian Church choir because of his alcoholism. That is why he resorts to lie for survival.

Q -3  Is Lushkoff a willing worker ? Why, then does he agree to chop wood for Sergei ?
Ans -   No , Lushkoff is not a willing worker. Sergei found Lushkoff in begging condition,  he offers job of a woodcutter.
He agreed to chop wood for Sergei because of pride and shame . He had been trapped by his own words. He had lost his own strength and stamina due to his habit of drinking. So, he had no other way  but to accept  Sergei's offers.

Q -4 Sergei says " I  am happy that my words have taken effect." Why does he say so ? Is he right in saying this ?
Ans - Sergei said so  because he thought his advice helped Lushkoff to get rid of his need of begging. He caught him lie and encouraged him to work. After two year he found out that Lushkoff was a notary and was paid  thirty five doubles a month. He chose to take pride and in having helped a person change.

But he was not right in saying so because  he was unaware of the fact that this was only because of Olga. He yet had not developed the habit of working hard.

Q - 5  Lushkoff is earning thirty five doubles a month. How is he obliged to Sergei for this ?
Ans -   He is obliged to Sergei who has changed his life. Lushkoff is earning thirty five doubles  a month now.
It is all because of Sergei that he got an opportunity to meet the cook, Olga. She helped him with his work. She always encouraged him  and developed in him a new confidence that helped him secure a fine job to earn his livelihood and respectful life.
